Unstable cracks trigger asymptotic rupture modes in bimaterial friction

چکیده
The rupture of the interface joining two materials under frictional contact controls their macroscopic sliding. Interface dynamics depend markedly on mechanical properties bulk that bound interface. When are similar, recent experimental and theoretical work has shown shear cracks described by Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) quantitatively describe interfaces. elastic dissimilar, many new effects take place result from bimaterial coupling: normal stress at is elastodynamically coupled to local slip rates. At low velocities, coupling not very significant governed `bimaterial cracks' well LEFM. As velocities increase, we experimentally theoretically show how become unstable a subsonic critical velocity, $c_T$. direction opposes applied in softer material, $c_T$ limiting velocity. ruptures propagate demonstrate provides an explanation for when pulses (new modes characterized spatially localized slip) generated. This completes fundamental physical description interfaces takes place.

Cracks, pulses and macroscopic asymmetry of dynamic rupture on a bimaterial interface with velocity-weakening friction
S U M M A R Y We study in-plane ruptures on a bimaterial fault governed by a velocity-weakening friction with a regularized normal stress response. Numerical simulations and analytical estimates provide characterization of the ranges of velocity-weakening scales, nucleation lengths and background stresses for which ruptures behave as cracks or pulses, decaying or sustained, bilateral or unilate...
متن کاملDynamic rupture on a bimaterial interface governed by slip-weakening friction
S U M M A R Y We perform 2-D finite-difference calculations of mode II rupture along a bimaterial interface governed by slip-weakening friction, with the goal of clarifying rupture properties and the conditions leading to the development of unilateral wrinkle-like pulses. The simulations begin with an imposed bilateral rupture in a limited source region. Rupture properties outside the imposed s...
متن کاملPartition of unity enrichment for bimaterial interface cracks
Partition of unity enrichment techniques are developed for bimaterial interface cracks. A discontinuous function and the two-dimensional near-tip asymptotic displacement functions are added to the finite element approximation using the framework of partition of unity. This enables the domain to be modelled by finite elements without explicitly meshing the crack surfaces. The crack-tip enrichmen...
متن کاملScrew Dislocation Interacting with Interfacial Edge-Cracks in Piezoelectric Bimaterial Strips
This paper is concerned with the interaction between an interfacial edge-crack and a screw dislocation under out-of-plane mechanical and in-plane electric loading in a piezoelectric bimaterial strip. In addition to a discontinuous electric potential across the slip plane, the dislocation is subjected to a line-force and a line-charge at the core. Under the framework of linear piezoelectricity, ...
متن کاملAsymptotic Imaging of Perfectly Conducting Cracks
In this paper, we consider cracks with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We first derive an asymptotic expansion of the boundary perturbations that are due to the presence of a small crack. Based on this formula, we design a noniterative approach for locating a collection of small cracks. In order to do so, we construct a response matrix from the boundary measurements. The location and the length ...
